Russian Empire agreed to help Georgia. The Empress Catherine II sent the armies there and by the 1870s Russian armies completely relieved Georgia of Turkish presence. In 1783 the Governor of Georgia – Irakli II and Catherine II signed the Georgievsky Treaty according to which Russia established its protectorate over Kartlian –Kakhetian (Georgian) kingdom. In 1801 Russia annulled the Treaty and annexed Eastern Georgia to Russia. Western Georgia was part by part added to Russian Empire from 1803 to 1864.
